Ruaraidh Sackville Hamilton joined IRRI on 1 August 2002. His areas of expertise span many aspects of the analysis, conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity in situ and ex situ. His career in genetic resources began in 1976 with a PhD on variation and adaptation in wild populations of the temperate forage species, Trifolium repens in the UK. He followed his PhD with postdoctoral research on ecology, evolutionary biology and bioinformatics, and established a data management system for the Genetic Resources Unit at CIAT. He undertook a number of short-term consultancies for FAO, IPGRI and DFiD to help develop genetic resources programs in the Republic of Korea, India, Uruguay, Yemen Arab Republic and Syria, and to help develop genetic resources science. From 1990 to 2002 he was at IGER in the UK, and for most of that time was head of IGER's Genetic Resources Unit. In that capacity he helped co-ordinate international networks in Europe through the ECP/GR, co-ordinated an EU-funded project on optimising seed regeneration procedures for genebanks ("ICONFORS"), and introduced GIS and molecular techniques to IGER's GRU.

PhD 1990 Oklahoma State University

Ken McNally joined GRC on 1 July 2001 as a molecular geneticist, whose research focuses on allele mining in the large germplasm collection in the International Rice Genebank. With a background in biochemistry and molecular genetics, and strong orientation in bioinformatics, Ken is well placed to lead this new effort in exploiting the diversity of rice germplasm. From 1996 to 2001, he was first Project, then Affiliate Scientist at IRRI, carrying out research to develop a perennial upland rice. Prior to joining IRRI, he had worked in a number of laboratories in the USA on molecular mapping in tomato, molecular systematics of endosymbiotic marine dinoflagellates, and fungal mitochondrial genetics.
