Who works and studies at IRRI?

IRRI employs more than 1,000 world-class scientific and support staff. We are a significant local employer, with Filipinos making up 95% of our workforce—many of them trained by IRRI as scientists. To lead our research, we have more than 80 internationally recruited senior scientists, almost half of whom are from developing countries.

Our training programs include graduate and postdoctoral research and short-term courses. Most of our students and trainees are from developing countries, with many taking the knowledge and skills they develop at IRRI back home to help in their local rice industry.

By 2006, almost 10,000 scientists had been educated or trained at IRRI, including more than 1,300 who received degree training. Several thousand more have been trained through IRRI’s collaborative in-country courses. Many of these people rise to senior government and scientific positions, where they play a key role in ensuring the food security and rural development of their nations.
