  • To provide policy guidelines to the Steering Committees of Networks (including the Asian component of INGER) and Research Consortia, and to act as a Steering Committee for policy setting and implementation of the newly established Ecoregional Activities for Sustainable Resource Management in Tropical Asia;
  • To promote new initiatives, as appropriate, and to seek donors’ support for the partnership activities;
  • To harmonize NARES views and provide feedback to IRRI in particular, and to the CGIAR in general, on agricultural research needs of the Asia region;
  • To develop concepts for an ecoregional approach to research in rice and rice-based farming systems that is relevant to the Asian region; and
  • To facilitate linkages with advanced institutions conducting relevant research.

How we work together

Membership
CORRA member countries are represented by senior officials of selected national agricultural research and extension systems (NARES) in Asia. Countries are selected based on the importance of rice in their national agricultural plans and for their representation of rice ecosystems. IRRI is represented by the IRRI director general. CORRA raises policy issues that run across the existing partnership mechanisms for rice research in Asia.

CORRA - specific objectives

  • To promote more effective partnership on rice research in the Asian region, and guide formulation and sharing of responsibility in its implementation;
  • To guide and promote strong partnership between NARES, IRRI, and other relevant institutions; and among NARES – strengthen established mechanisms; such as research consortia and networks;
  • To provide policy guidelines to the Steering Committees of Networks (including the Asian component of INGER) and Research Consortia, and to act as a Steering Committee for policy setting and implementation of the newly established Ecoregional Activities for Sustainable Resource Management in Tropical Asia;
  • To promote new initiatives, as appropriate, and to seek donors’ support for the partnership activities;
  • To harmonize NARES views and provide feedback to IRRI in particular, and to the CGIAR in general, on agricultural research needs of the Asia region;
  • To develop concepts for an ecoregional approach to research in rice and rice-based farming systems that is relevant to the Asian region; and
  • To facilitate linkages with advanced institutions conducting relevant research.

CORRA’s role is evolving as evidenced by the output
from the CORRA meeting, Beijing 2002:

  • CORRA is an umbrella framework, focusing on policies, strategies, directions and opportunities
  • IRRC and CURE are subset networks, focusing on technological interventions and their impact, technology transfer and information dissemination
  • Identify issues and directions for regional R&D networks, e.g., IRRC, CURE
  • Streamline and coordinate IRRI-NARES partnership and research agenda - help identify priorities for member-countries
  • Provide advice and feedback to IRRI on its research priorities and strategic activities
  • Build collaboration and promote sharing of information and technology among the member-countries
  • Address key issues for the rice industry and rice research and influence policy
  • Promote sharing of research capacities and/or facilities among member-countries, e.g., biotech, high throughput and genomic research
  • Identify opportunities for sharing research capacities and potential funding source
  • Advise on mechanisms and seeking consensus among members
  • Fund raising
