Rice has become an important crop for Burundi, which increased its rice production 316% between 1984 and 2011. In 2010 Burundi was importing about one third of its rice and making efforts to further increase production. IRRI has been officially collaborating with Burundi since 2008.

IRRI is collaborating with a number of institutions in Burundi to breed better rice varieties and build capacity.

Rice was first introduced in Burundi in 1890, but it really took off as a major crop and staple for Burundians in the 1980s and has been growing in importance ever since.

IRRI first started working in Burundi in 2008 when together they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve rice research and development.
