Irrigated Rice Research Consortium

Research agendaThe management of irrigated rice ecosystems for sustained productivity and profitability requires the efficient management of nutrients for high rice yields and avoidance of pest incidence. The Productivity and Sustainability workgroup ensures ecologically and socially acceptable rice production in Asia through the use of nutrient, pest, and crop management practices that enhance profitability and soil quality of intensive, irrigated rice systems. Specific objectives are: 1. To identify, refine, and facilitate delivery by NARES of improved nutrient management practices that meet site-specific needs and opportunities for enhanced productivity and profitability. 2. To identify and propagate with NARES approaches for integrating management of principal insect and disease pests with compatible nutrient and crop management. 3. To strengthen interdisciplinary research and delivery on nutrient, soil, pest, and crop management within NARES and to enhance interactions among Asian rice research and extension workers. Expected Outputs: 1. Improved nutrient management approaches, which meet site-specific needs and opportunities, identified and refined 2. Simple messages (guidelines, decision tools, etc) explaining deliverable site-specific nutrient management approaches developed 3. Deliverable site-specific nutrient management approaches demonstrated, evaluated, and adapted 4. Principles governing relationships between nutrient management and principal pests (insect and disease) in irrigated rice recognized, and opportunities for improved integrated nutrient-pest management identified 5. Simple knowledge-based messages for improving farmer decision making in optimizing nutrient and pest management developed 6. Deliverable options for improved integrated site-specific nutrient & pest management demonstrated, evaluated, and adapted Click here to view the brochure on Feeding crop needs: site-specific nutrient management featuring the outputs of the Productivity and Sustainability Work Group in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Vietnam; the evidence of impact of SSNM; current research; and future thrusts of the PSWG. |
