New publication: Rice: A practical guide to nutrient management

A pocket-sized book for site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) and identifying nutrient disorder in rice is now available. This full-color book is based on Rice: nutrient disorders and nutrient management, a co-publication of IRRI and the Potash & Phosphate Institute-Potash & Phosphate Institute of Canada. The nutrient management section has been largely revised by simplifying the SSNM concept for wider-scale delivery. The sections on nutrient deficiencies and toxicities are summarized into 2 or 3 pages per topic, which can be quickly checked against the photos in the annex. The Guide is designed to encourage translation into other languages and low-cost co-publication in partner countries.

Site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) concepts have been developed in recent years as alternatives to the use of blanket fertilizer recommendations for large areas. These new approaches aim to achieve efficient fertilizer use and balanced fertilization. They offer higher profit for farmers, higher yields per unit of applied fertilizer, and environmental protection by preventing excessive fertilizer use. The SSNM strategies have been successfully evaluated in a wide range of farmers' fields in Asia, and are now positioned for wider-scale validation and farmer adaptation in Asia.

The outlined strategies target the irrigated lowland rice systems with some extrapolation potential to rainfed systems. Local adoption mainly entails adjusting the SSNM principles to specific crop rotations, major germplasm differences, crop management practices, climatic conditions, and available nutrient sources. Integrated approaches are encouraged to make full use of the benefits of improved nutrient management. Also required is greater emphasis on interpreting farmers' problems and developing economically attractive solutions tailored to their objectives.
