Site Characteristics
Heilongjiang Province is located in the northeast of China. It
has 12 million hectares (ha) of cultivated land, of which 1.8
million ha was used for growing irrigated rice in 2005.
Heilongjiang Province is important for commercial rice
production at the national level because up to 60% of total rice
production is exported to other provinces. |

The
climate in Heilongjiang province is cool, with the temperature
varying greatly between day and night. Annual precipitation
ranges from 400−600 mm in rice planting areas. Due to climate
limitation, only one rice crop can be grown per year—single rice
with Japonica cultivars of about 120- to 145-day growth
duration.
Two major rice soil types are
found in Heilongjiang Province:
• Soils derived from alluvial deposits. These soils mainly
occur in the Sanjiang Plains in the northeast of the
province, and usually have high organic matter content and
fertility.
• Soils derived from albic deposits. These soils (called
alb-boreal luvisols) belong to the medium or low-yielding
rice soils, mainly distributed in the southeast of the
province.
Development and Evaluation of SSNM
Research
on the development of SSNM was conducted in pilot villages near
the city of Harbin from 2004-06. Activities in 2005-06 included
research on nitrogen use efficiency and optimizing N management
for transplanted rice near Harbin, as well as extension and
evaluation of SSNM to other locations in the province.
