Site Characteristics
Hunan is
an inland province in central China with a total land area of
211,800 km2. Hunan Province ranks first in rice
production among provinces in China.
Two main
rice-based cropping systems are practiced in Hunan: |
|
|
|
| |

|
• Double rice cropping with
early rice grown from April to July and with late rice grown
from July to October. Inbred or hybrid cultivars are grown
in the early rice season, whereas hybrid cultivars are
typically grown in the late rice season.
• Single rice cropping with a long-duration cultivar grown
from April to September in rotation with an upland crop such
as oilseed rape.
Rice is
typically transplanted, although interest in direct wet-seeding
to reduce labor costs is increasing, especially for single rice
and early rice in the northern part of Hunan Province. The
climate is subtropical with warm temperatures and adequate
rainfall (annual precipitation = 1100−1900 mm).
Development
and Evaluation of SSNM
On-farm
trials to evaluate N management options and determine N-limited
yields through the nutrient omission plot technique were
conducted in 2003-05. The evaluation of N management options was
initially conducted using the chlorophyll meter (SPAD).
Beginning in 2004, the four-panel IRRI leaf color chart (LCC)
was included in the development of improved N management
practices, replacing the use of the more expensive SPAD meter.
