Myanmar

Site Characteristics

Myanmar is an agricultural country with rice as the main staple food crop, yet rice yields are lower than in many other Asian countries. Fertilizer use is relatively low in Myanmar, and rice farmers use little or no P and K fertilizer.

There are two rice-growing seasons per year:

Summer or dry season from December to April. This is the higher yielding season, and rice is typically established by direct, wet seeding.

Wet season from June to October. This is the lower yielding season, and rice is established by transplanting.

The average annual rainfall in main rice-growing areas ranges from about 2300 mm in the Ayeyarwaddy Delta to about 900 mm further north in Sagaing Division. Most of the rainfall occurs from May to October.

Research and Demonstration Sites

On-farm activities on site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) started in 2002 at Hlegu Township in Yangon Division. From 2003 to 2005, field research to develop and demonstrate improved nutrient management practices was conducted in Ayeyarwaddy, Yangon, Bago West, and Sagaing Division, which represent the major rice-growing areas in Myanmar.
