The concept referred to as SSNM was initially evaluated by scientists for four years in about 200 irrigated rice farms across six Asian countries.

It was then refined through collaboration of farmers with scientists to provide farmers with the tools to flexibly tailor their fertilizer use to the specific needs of rice in their fields.
