With SSNM, farmers manage nutrients to match the
needs of the crop for optimal growth at critical
stages.
"The need of a rice plant for nutrients varies,
depending on its growth stage. When rice is young,
its growth rate is slow, and thus, the need for
nitrogen fertilizer is small.
As rice grows older, its need for nitrogen
increases," says Dr. Shaobing Peng, scientist
at International Rice Research Institute, based in
the Philippines.
