IRRI is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to economic analyses in support of a regional-scale abiotic stress project on rice production in South Asia.
|
Responsibilities
The incumbent will conduct socioeconomic research including analysis of livelihood systems of farmers in stress-prone rainfed environments, assessment of technology needs of farmers differentiated by wealth categories, gender and other relevant variables, analysis of technology adoption patterns and constraints to adoption, and impact assessment.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD in economics/agricultural economics or related discipline and should have a good understanding of agricultural production systems of south Asia and advanced skills in one or more of the following areas: household surveys, data management, econometric analysis, and impact assessment. A background in farming systems research and experience working with national agricultural research and extension systems are desirable.

Responsibilities
The incumbent will use remote sensing and/or simulation modeling tools to characterize spatial and temporal patterns of the effect of drought stress and other abiotic stresses on rice production. This information should be helpful to refine breeding, selection, and dissemination of abiotic stress-tolerant rice varieties.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD in crop simulation, climatology, hydrology, physical geography, agricultural sciences, or a related field. It is desirable that candidates have a good understanding of agricultural production systems and advanced skills in one or more of the following areas: ecological modeling, computer programming, statistics, GIS, and remote sensing. Candidates should also have a strong record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals, be fluent in English, and have good communication skills.

IRRI is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join its staff at headquarters in the Philippines. This 2-year position is funded by the project, Stress- tolerant rice for poor farmers in Africa and South Asia. The position will be supervised by drought and aerobic rice breeder in the IRRI’s Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology division.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join the IRRI’s program on “raising the productivity in rainfed environments: attacking the roots of poverty” (program1) at IRRI, an international, multi-disciplinary team that is involved with the development and dissemination of stress tolerant rice for poor farmers in Africa and Asia. Within this context, the postdoctoral fellow position is specifically aimed at working to improve the drought stress tolerance of rice varieties.
The successful candidate will 1) identify and fine map major QTLs for grain yield under lowland drought stress using standardized field phenotyping protocols and selective genotyping approach; 2) develop and screen new breeding populations for developing drought tolerant breeding lines for lowland drought prone ecosystems of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa; 3) assist drought and aerobic breeder in conducting drought breeding experiments at IRRI as well as in coordinating with national partners in India, Bangladesh and Nepal; and 4) interact with scientists working with different aspects of drought stress in rice.

Candidates should have 1) a PhD in plant breeding and genetics/ agriculture/ biology, or related fields; 2) practical experience in drought breeding, drought screening and hands on experience in molecular biology desirable; 3) strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to handle logistics; 4) proven ability to perform in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment; and 5) excellent interpersonal skills.

IRRI is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (crop physiology, molecular breeding, and related disciplines) to join its staff at headquarters in the Philippines. This 2-year position is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) project on stress-tolerant Rice for poor farmers in Africa and South Asia. The position will be under supervision of senior scientist, crop physiology in IRRI’s Crop and Environmental Sciences Division and will be assigned to contribute to developing rice varieties with improved performance and yield stability under drought in rainfed ecosystems.

Responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will join a multi-disciplinary research team that is studying various aspects of drought resistance that involves intensive and multi-location field screening, high throughput phenotyping, and germplasm evaluation for drought tolerance improvement in rice.
The postdoctoral fellow will:
1) Active involvement in multi-location field screening for drought resistance; 2) Contribute to the physiological and molecular characterization of drought stress effects on crop growth and productivity processes through the use of breeding materials and specialized genetic stocks; 3) Combine innovative drought phenotyping approaches and quantitative genetics for QTL and association analyses; and 4) Collaborate with the BMGF research team and international partners for the implementation of the research strategy for drought tolerance improvement in rice.

Qualifications
Candidates should have 1) a PhD in crop physiology or related fields with some postdoctoral research experience; 2) practical experience in field screening and molecular biology techniques; 3) strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to integrate lab and field work; and 4) proven ability to perform in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. Working experience in stress biology and/or multi-location trials would be an advantage. The position requires some international and regional travel.

Responsibilities
a) Provide technical and logistical support in the planning, design, coordination, and implementation of farmer participatory research and capacity enhancement strategies of the project with national agricultural research and extension systems (NARES), Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the private sector in all sites of the project in South Asia; b) Conduct socioeconomic research with inclusion of gender concerns related to participatory varietal selection (PVS) and crop and natural resource management (CNRM) in stress-prone rainfed environments; c) Help facilitate up-scaling strategies for technologies identified for dissemination to the NARES and the farmer-beneficiaries.

Qualifications
