Upland farmers learn more about mechanization

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in Los Baños, Laguna, has been working for many years to find new ways to make rice farming more efficient by developing innovative farm equipment for Philippine rice growers. The Center for Rural Technology and Development (CRTD), an NGO based in Calauan, Laguna, recently held a five-day seminar on integrated farming systems that look at this issue. One of the highlights of the workshop was a visit to IRRI by some 20 upland farmers from Agotaya, Palawan. The farmers are shown here being briefed on some of the farm equipment designed by the Institute by IRRI engineer and Agriculture Engineering Division assistant scientist Eugenio Castro Jr. (2nd from right). The Palawan group also received foundation seeds from IRRI's Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biochemistry Division, for propagation once they return home.
