Rainfed lowland rice improvement
D.J. Mackill, W.R. Coffman, and D.P. Garrity
Product ID: 9789712200717

Despite its importance, rainfed lowland rice has only recently received the attention it deserves from the rice research community. Rice is grown on some 37 million hectares of rainfed lowlands worldwide, about one-fourth of the total rice area. These lowlands are heterogeneous in any single location, diverse across locations, and unpredictable everywhere-perhaps these facts account, in part, for the historical neglect of rice grown in this ecosystem.

This book covers all aspects of the rice improvement program, in the tradition of the classic manual Rice improvement by P.R. Jennings, W.R. Coffman, and H.E. Kauffmann, published by IRRI more than 16 years ago, but it focuses on the details and peculiarities of dealing with rainfed lowland rice.

Fourteen comprehensive chapters bring a wealth of information to rice researchers by describing the components of rainfed lowland breeding programs, and examining breeding procedures from selection of parents to release of varieties.

Rainfed lowland rice: advances in nutrient management research
Edited by J.K. Ladha, L. Wade, A. Dobermann, W. Reichardt, G.J.D. Kirk, and C. Piggin
Product ID: 9789712201172

Rainfed lowland rice presents a series of unique challenges for nutrient research. It is important to understand water and nutrient dynamics/balances and uptake and use efficiency to obtain plant responses for sustainable increases in productivity. But much of the research on sustainable resource management that is strategic in nature can only be done at selected sites because of the inherent heterogeneity of the rainfed lowland ecosystem. The Rainfed Lowland Rice Research Consortium (RLRRC), together with the Ubon Rice Research Center, Thailand, organized a thematic International Workshop on Nutrient Research in Rainfed Lowlands 12-15 October 1998 in Ubon. The objectives included an appraisal of studies relating to nutrients in rainfed lowland rice, with emphasis on work done at the seven RLRRC sites, and consideration of future research issues and opportunities for collaboration. Seventy scientists from 15 countries gathered to discuss subjects covering those objectives. This publication, which was supported by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR), contains the papers presented at the symposium, and the recommendations emerging from the group discussions. It should be a useful source of information on nutrients in rainfed lowland rice culture.

Rainfed lowland rice-agricultural research for high-risk environments
Edited by K.T. Ingram
Product ID: 9789712200670

The rainfed lowland ecosystem for rice covers 37 million hectares worldwide, about 25% of the total rice area. Rainfed lowlands are heterogeneous in any single location, diverse across locations, and unpredictable everywhere. In 1991, the Asian Development Bank provided a grant to establish a new mode of partnership, called research consortia. As a result, eight institutions in five Asian countries established a research consortium to conduct the decentralized strategic research needed to address the complex issues of the rainfed lowland rice ecosystem.

This book, which describes various methods used and reports the findings carried out in 10 countries in Asia, also serves as a baseline for researchers to evaluate change.

Redesigning rice photosynthesis to increase yield
Edited by J.E. Sheehy, P.L. Mitchell, and B. Hardy
Product ID: 9789712201462

The principal objective of a recent workshop was to explore the possibilities for increasing yield in rice, to keep pace with population growth, by redesigning the rice plant’s photosynthetic pathway. IRRI scientists wanted to establish at what level they should work on this problem, what are the key areas into which they should channel their energies, and, crucially, what partnerships could be constructed to further this research. Participants, including internationally renowned experts on the topic, discussed whether the inefficiencies in current photosynthetic systems could be eliminated and if it would be possible to imitate nature and produce a rice plant with the superior photosynthetic capacity of maize. The difficulties in producing such novel plants and the advantages they would offer in terms of yield and use of natural resources were the subject of much discussion. It was concluded that such a plant could revolutionize rice farming, but producing it will not be an easy task. The chapters in this book cover various subjects, such as the economic consequences of yield improvements for poverty, the molecular genetics of photosynthesis, and ecophysiological and evolutionary perspectives of photosynthesis in wetlands. IRRI continues to face the challenge of using basic science in the quest to reduce hunger and a workshop such as this one helps us set the agenda.

Rice area by type of culture: South, Southeast, & East Asia maps
R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke
Product ID: 9789711040680

The human geography of rice production from Pakistan to Japan is characterized by high population density and by moderate-to-rapid increases in population. More than half of the world's population is crowded into South, Southeast, and East Asia—15% of the earth's land area. Rice is by far the leading food, and production must increase by at least 8 million tons of rough rice per year just to maintain the current levels of food intake. How much area is devoted to rice cultivation in this region? Where are the rice-growing areas, and under what cultural conditions is the crop produced? These seem to be simple questions but there have been no simple answers because of the variations of the definitions of terms and the framework for data collection among countries.

Rice area by type of culture: South, Southeast, & East Asia. A revised & updated database
R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke
Product ID: 9789712200960

During 1980-81, a major effort was undertaken to gather data for the rice-producing countries in monsoon Asia, excluding Japan, and to classify areas into a sixfold water control-based scheme developed by IRRI scientists. In 1982, tables, text explaining how the data were processed, and three large multicolored wall maps appeared in Rice area by type of culture: South, Southeast, and East Asia. The maps and data from which they were developed are now seriously out-of-date.

A revised and updated data base has been developed largely on the basis of a wide range of official data published by various government agencies and NARS-IRRI field research teams. The new version has no paper maps, but rather is offered electronically in conjunction with two GIS computer mapping packagesÑArcViewTM and Atlas*ProTM.

The basic data (in tabular form) in this publication serve as a data source for software packages. Data thought to be of special interest to IRRI scientists and which were readily available have been included in the tables.

Rice biotechnology
Edited by G.S. Khush and G.H. Toenniessen
Product ID: 9780851987125

Until recently, little was known about the cellular and molecular genetics of rice. Fortunately, the Rockefeller Foundation took the initiative and organized an International Program on Rice Biotechnology in 1985. The Foundation is funding research on rice biotechnology in carefully selected laboratories in industrialized countries and helping build capacity to use biotechnology in rice improvement in developing countries. Much useful information has been generated, and rice is now considered a 'model' cereal crop for biotechnology research.

Rice blast disease
Edited by R.S. Zeigler, S.A. Leong, and P.S. Teng
Product ID: 9780851989358

Rice blast disease has long been recognized as the most explosive and potentially damaging disease of the rice crop. The complexity of the disease and the formidable challenge of the diversity of the pathogen have dictated that no lone institution or group can expect to solve the problem in isolation.

The conference on which this publication is based was the fourth such international gathering of scientists from universities, international and national research centers working on this problem.

More than 120 scientists from 20 countries shared their latest findings, which are published in this book. From the contents, it is clear that tremendous progress has been made in our understanding of, and our ability to manipulate, the rice-pathogen system to reduce losses.

Rice blast modeling & forecasting

Product ID: 9789712200113

Blast disease causes significant yield losses in both temperate and tropical climates. The disease, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, is complex. Many questions about its epidemiology remain unanswered, despite many scientist-years spent on research. The blast pathogen is also highly variable, which makes the development of durable host-plant resistance difficult.

Scientists are using computer modeling and simulation to synthesize and understand this complex pathosystem. The models help explain the factors that govern blast epidemics, and help in the design of control systems that minimize yield losses. The same models have potential to guide breeding programs and develop strategies to prolong the usefulness of blast-resistance genes.

One session of the 1990 International Rice Research Conference cosponsored by IRRI and the Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea, focused on a systems approach to blast modeling and forecasting. This book contains the papers presented in that session.

Rice Genetics V
edited by Darshan S Brar, David J Mackill & Bill Hardy
Product ID: 007-981-270-772-7

Rice is now the model plant for genetic research on crop plants; and those who work on rice do so not only to help grow and eat it, but also to advance the frontiers of genetics and molecular biology. Progress made in the last 20 years, since the first International Rice Genetics Symposium (IRGS), has made rice the organism of choice for research on crop plants, and it has become a reference genome.

This volume is a collection of the papers presented at the Fifth IRGS in 2005. It reports the latest developments in the field and includes research on breeding, mapping of genes and quantitative trait loci, identification and cloning of candidate genes for biotic and abiotic stresses, gene expression, as well as genomic databases and mutant induction for functional genomics.

Rice germplasm: collecting, preservation, use

Product ID: 9789712200267

The collection in the International Rice Germplasm Center at IRRI is not the Institute's sole property: it belongs to the world. International cooperation in collecting, preserving, and using plant genetic resources without limitations must continue. Controversies that involve intellectual property rights and political systems need to be resolved. This will require broad-cased discussions among scientists, lawyers, breeders, and the private and public sectors.

IRRI and IBPGR are working together to facilitate dialogue on this issue, and collaborated in hosting the third international workshop on rice germplasm 10-12 May 1990 at IRRI headquarters. A distinguished group of scientists all over the world who are concerned with safeguarding the world's rice germplasm participated. They vigorously discussed ideas and activities to foster the continuing exchange of germplasm. This book is just part of their work to ensure that germplasm is always freely available. IRRI will continue to join forces in efforts to reach that common goal.

Rice grain marketing and quality issue

Product ID: 9789712200120

As rice supplies increase to meet demand, and as incomes rise in many developing countries, rice consumers become increasingly concerned with the chemical and physical characteristics of the rice that they buy. Those grain quality preferences affect the prices they are willing to pay.

Selective breeding for preferred qualities in particular market areas could result in the return of more of the benefits of improved quality rice (with the higher market price it commands) to the farmer. This is particularly true for irrigated rice, the source of most rice in the market.

One session of the 1990 International Rice Research Conference cosponsored by IRRI and the Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea, focused specifically on grain quality and consumer preferences for particular characteristics of rice in different markets. This book contains the research papers presented in that session.

Rice in deepwater
D. Catling
Product ID: 9780333549780

Deepwater rice sustains millions of subsistence farmers in South and Southeast Asia and West Africa. During the monsoon, only deepwater rice can be grown on the fertile plains and deltas of several of the world's great rivers. But the crop was largely overlooked in the first effort to expand production of high-yielding varieties in the favorable environments.

The importance of deepwater rice began to emerge in the 1970s. Now the pace of research has quickened. Dr. David Catling, author of this basic text, has been one of the leaders in this development.

The emphasis in the book on all aspects of the deepwater rice agroecosystemincluding the human environment, and the preference given to results of filed studies over laboratory and greenhouse workwill be especially appreciated by current and future researchers, and by agricultural administrators and planners.

Rice in human nutrition

Product ID: 9789251031490

Traditionally, rice has been the staple food and main source of income for millions of people, and it will continue to be a mainstay of life for future generations. In many countries, essential development efforts are concentrated on rice to meet domestic needs for food. In the developing countries of Asia, rice is also an important item of international trade.

FAO initiated its series of nutrition studies with Rice and rice diets: a nutrition survey. Since its publication in 1948, understanding of the properties of rice and rice diets has advanced significantly. In addition, enormous increases in rice production and greater sophistication in processing technology have been achieved, In response to the need to provide comprehensive and technical information reflecting these considerable changes, this new edition on rice and nutrition has been created.

Bienvenido O. Juliano, former IRRI cereal chemist, wrote the text in collaboration with FAO. Its content is broad in scope and rich in detail. Rice cultivation practices are discussed along with patterns of rice consumption. Certain nutritional problems that are sometimes related to rice diets are described, and extensive details on the nutritional value of rice are provided. The characteristics of rice and the qualities that influence consumption and trade are covered as well as techniques for rice processing and preparation. The future of rice production in the context of concerns about population growth and the environment is discussed. An extensive bibliography is also provided.

Rice pest science and management
Edited by P.S. Teng, K.L. Heong, and K. Moody
Product ID: 9789712200519

One of the most significant changes in rice production in recent years is the acceptance of farmers of the integrated pest management (IPM) concept. IPM has become important because of insect pest outbreaks that resulted from misuse of broad-spectrum insecticides in situations where they were not needed.

Adoption of the IPM concept at the farm level is best promoted through implementation agencies such as FAO, UN, and the national extension systems. IRRIÕs comparative advantage lies in solid research to produce the knowledge that results in improved technologies.

Since the 1992 International Rice Research Conference was held, the selected papers included in this book have been extensively revised and updated. New data have been incorporated, reflecting the most recent advances.

This publication highlights many new avenues of research in rice pest management. We believe the papers and recommendations will serve to guide research for the next few years toward more sustainable pest management systems.

Rice production in Cambodia
Edited by H.J. Nesbitt
Product ID: 9789712201004

Rice production in Cambodia has passed through a series of impressive developments and setbacks over the past 2,000 years. During the 20th century alone, Cambodia rose to become one of the major rice exporters of the world and then slumped into a period during which a vast percentage of the population had little to eat. Recent democratic elections and the opening of the economy bode well for Cambodian agriculture and a greatly expanded rice production base is expected in the near future.

This book presents a brief history of rice in the Cambodian economy and considerably details the countryÕs rice-growing ecosystems. Included are descriptions of the topography, climate, and soils on which the crop is grown, details of the biotic and abiotic factors influencing productivity, farmersÕ management practices, current and potential scope for farm mechanization, rice-fish interactions, and some discussion on the constraints to increased production.

Rice research & development policy: a first encounter
Edited by R.S. Zeigler
Product ID: 9789712200847

Rice research and development policy presents the results of the research-policy dialog during the 1995 International Rice Research Conference (IRRC).To initiate this dialog, prominent policymakers at the national and international levels presented their views on the significance of agricultural research and its linkages to policy. Semistructured discussions then moved to a roundtable format, involving 30 policymakers and six research directors from 21 countries, primarily in Asia. The participants synthesized the results of their discussions around issues discussed during the IRRC: vulnerability of a staple food supply for Asia, meeting the needs of the rural poor, and GATT and food security self-sufficiency.

Rice Research and Development in the Flood-Prone Ecosystem
Edited by S.I. Bhuiyan, M.Z. Abedin, V.P. Singh, and B. Hardy
Product ID: 9799712201973

Rice Research and Development in the Flood-Prone Ecosystem (edited by S. Bhuiyan et al) presents papers and major recommendations from a recent international workshop on Rice Research and Development in the Flood-Prone Rice Lands of South and Southeast Asia in Gazipur, Bangladesh. Participants discussed the hydrological, biological, agronomic and socioeconomic perspectives of flood-prone rice environments; the challenges, possibilities and strategies for improving the productivity of rice lands in flood-prone environments; and issues and strategies for action. The flood-prone ecosystem consists of basins and lowland areas adjacent to rivers in the humid and subhumid tropics and in coastal areas subject to tide- induced flooding. This ecosystem is important for many rice-producing countries in South and Southeast Asia, where more than 11 million ha are prone to uncontrolled flooding. Globally, the flood-prone ecosystem accounts for 9% of total rice lands, but in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand it can represent more than a quarter of total rice lands.

Rice research and production in the 21st century
Edited by W.G. Rockwood
Product ID: 9789712201639

Many of the tributes that can be made to the life and accomplishments of Bob Chandler, the first director general of the International Rice Research Institute, can be found in these proceedings. His dedication to the gigantic effort for keeping hunger and poverty in Asia at bay is reflected in his work in founding IRRI and the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC). His special genius for organizing and leading goal-oriented research was instrumental in bringing about not only the Green Revolution but also a revolution in how international agricultural research is organized and supported.

M.S. Swaminathan, IRRI’s fourth director general, noted in a frontispiece to the Chandler book An Adventure in Applied Science: A History of the International Rice Research Institute that Chandler was “obviously modest when referring to his own contributions. It is therefore the duty of others who are aware of the history of agricultural progress…to chronicle the seminal role of Dr. Chandler.” These proceedings do that.

Readers who are most interested in Bob Chandler the man will find Part I rewarding. A long-time colleague and friend chronicles Chandler’s humble beginnings in rural Maine and his early years as a member of a somewhat itinerant family. Professional colleagues give readers of these proceedings a close-up personal look at the life and management styles that Chandler brought to the two international institutions he founded, and the respect and love engendered among their teams of scientists. Other colleagues remember how Chandler touched their lives throughout his long and distinguished career from university professor to his post-retirement activities in other international institutions.

Those readers most interested in rice, rice science, and innovations in both research methodologies and institutions will find enrichment in Parts II-IV. And beyond these proceedings, read Chandler’s books--An Adventure in Applied Science (noted above and available online in a series of pdf files from IRRI by clicking here) and Rice in the Tropics: A Guide to National Development.

Rice research in Asia: progress and priorities
Edited by R.E. Evenson, R.W. Herdt, and M. Hossain
Product ID: 9780851989976

Rice organizations are not immune from the need to achieve economic efficiency, in the sense of both cost efficiency and allocative efficiency. Priority setting is the general approach applied to research planning to achieve allocative efficiency across research problem areas.

The Rockefeller Foundation has drawn on this work to help determine the research goals it should emphasize in its funding. The book begins with a review of the problem and approaches that have been used previously. Several chapters then demonstrate how some areas of plant science research have contributed to gains in rice productivity and assess the current challenges of genetic improvement and pest control. The economic framework for priority setting and previous methods are reviewed, before a series of country case studies provide more practical applications of these. Overall, the book is of interest to scientists concerned with research on rice as well as agricultural economists, research planners, and administrators.

Rice roots: nutrient & water use
Edited by G.J.D. Kirk
Product ID: 9789712200502

This publication is the first of the four books resulting from the 1992 International Rice Research Conference.

The proportion of research effort devoted to the root system of rice has been much smaller than that given to the rest of the plant. This despite the fact that the rice plant invests up to 60% of its energy as carbon in its root system.

The papers included in this book were selected from presentations made at a small symposium on rice roots and the uptake of water and nutrients, and were edited and revised to reflect the substantive discussions at the symposium.

Rice village saga: three decades of green revolution in the Philippines
Yujiro Hayami and masao Kikuchi
Product ID: 9789712201295

The rice belt of Laguna Province, Philippines (popularly known as the heartland of the Green Revolution for its early adoption of modern rice varieties), has experienced dramatic economic and social changes in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Besides the major advances in the new rice technology, four major forces have prompted change: increasing population pressure on limited land, implementation of land reform programs, developments in infrastructure such as irrigation and roads, and penetration of urban economic activities. A unique data set generated from many surveys during the period 1966-97 in a typical village in Laguna, as put together in this book, illustrates a pattern of socioeconomic change shared by many irrigated rice areas in the Philippines as well as in other Asian economies.

Rice: a practical guide to nutrient management
Edited by T. Fairhurst and C. Witt
Product ID: 005-981-04-5758-8

Rice: A Practical Guide to Nutrient Management is a pocket sized guide book for managing nutrients and detecting nutrient deficiency and toxicity symptoms in rice grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The book is based on Rice: nutrient disorders and nutrient management., a co-publication by IRRI and PPI-PPIC, but with refined and simplified site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) concepts for practitioners. The approach has been successfully evaluated in a wide range of farmers' fields in Asia, and is now well positioned for wider scale evaluation and adaptation by farmers in Asia.

Aiming at efficient fertilizer use and balanced fertilization, the refined SSNM approach offers profit increases to farmers, higher yields per unit of applied fertilizer and protection of the environment by preventing excessive use of fertilizers. The Practical Guide presents simple guidelines and tools for the participatory development of improved nutrient management strategies that can be implemented by farmers at low cost. Farmers use the leaf color chart (LCC) for efficient nitrogen (N) management, and reliable and robust estimates of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) requirements can be worked out in the field (omission plot technique) without the need for costly laboratory analysis. Look up the right fertilizer rates in easy to navigate tables supported by clear guidelines.

The Practical Guide is printed on laminated paper for durability in the field use, and is designed for translation and publication in other languages.

Rice: A Practical Guide to Nutrient Management (2nd ed.)
Edited by T.H. Fairhurst, C. Witt, R.J. Buresh, and A. Dobermann
Product ID: 007-9789810579494

In the last five years, site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) for rice has become an integral part of initiatives on improving nutrient management in many Asian countries. Nutrient recommendations were tailored to location-specific needs, evaluated together with rice farmers, and promoted through public and private partnerships at wide-scale. The first edition of Rice: A Practical Guide to Nutrient Management published in 2002 quickly became the standard reference for printed materials on SSNM. The guide was high in demand with 2,000 copies distributed and sold to date.

Over the years, SSNM has been continually refined through research and evaluation as part of the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium. Conceptual improvements and simplifications were made particularly in nitrogen management. A standardized 4-panel leaf color chart (LCC) was produced and the promotion of the new LCC continues with more than 250,000 units distributed until the end of 2006. A new SSNM web site was developed (www.irri.org/irrc/ssnm) to provide up-to-date information and local recommendations for major rice-growing areas in Asia. The revised edition of the practical guide thus became necessary to be consistent with newer information provided in the SSNM web site and local training materials. We are pleased that this 2nd edition is about to be translated into a number of languages including Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, and Vietnamese.

This pocket-sized guide introduces the concept of yield gaps and the underlying constraints. The functions of each nutrient are explained in detail, with a description of the deficiency symptoms and recommended strategies for improved nutrient management. The 47-page color annex provides a pictorial guide to the identification of nutrient deficiencies in rice.

To make the 2nd edition of the guide as widely accessible as possible, the publishers decided not only to sell the guide through their Web sites and bookstores, but also to make the guide available in electronic format (pdf) using a Creative Commons “attribution-noncommercial-share alike” license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 ). Rice: nutrient disorders and nutrient management - handbook and CD
Achim Dobermann and Thomas Fairhurst
Product ID: 9789810427429

Thirty years ago, persuading rice farmers to use modern varieties and accompanying fertilizer inputs was easy because the results, in terms of yield increases, were often spectacular. Simultaneously, governments invested heavily in fertilizer subsidies, improved irrigation facilities, infrastructure, and rice price support mechanisms that made rice intensification (increased input use, increased number of crops per year) economically attractive. Further improvements in rice productivity, however, are likely to be much more incremental and "knowledge-based." Future yield increases will mostly result from the positive interactions and simultaneous management of different agronomic aspects such as nutrient supply, pest and disease control, and water.

In many countries, fertilizer and other input subsidies have already been removed and it is likely that, in the future, the maintenance of irrigation facilities will increasingly become the responsibility of farmers rather than governments. This means that to achieve the required future increases in rice production, extension services will need to switch from distributing prescriptive packets of production technology to a more participatory or client-based service function. Such an approach requires greater emphasis on interpreting farmers’ problems and developing economically attractive solutions tailored to each farmer’s objectives. Yet extension services are generally ill-prepared for such a change.

Rice: Nutrient Disorders and Nutrient Management is a handbook that provides a guide for detecting nutrient deficiency and toxicity symptoms and managing nutrients in rice grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Some background information is included on the function of nutrients in the rice plant and possible causes of nutrient deficiencies, together with a description of nutrient deficiency symptoms, the effect of nutrient deficiency on plant growth, and the effect of flooding on nutrient availability. Estimates of nutrient removal in grain and straw have been included to help researchers and extension workers calculate the amount of nutrients removed from the field under different management systems. Strategies for preventing and treating nutrient deficiencies are described.

In most tropical and subtropical regions, rice farms are small, nutrients are managed "by hand," and farmers do not have access to more resource-demanding forms of nutrient management such as soil and plant tissue testing. Therefore, we describe a new approach to calculate site-specific nutrient management recommendations for N, P, and K in lowland rice. The concept described is based on ongoing on-farm research in the Mega Project on Reversing Trends in Declining Productivity in Intensive, Irrigated Rice Systems, a collaborative project between IRRI and researchers in China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. As this work progresses, a more complete approach for site-specific nutrient management will evolve.

The main targets of the handbook are the irrigated and rainfed lowland rice systems because these systems account for about 80% of the total harvested area of rice and 92% of global rice production. Where appropriate, additional information has been included for upland rice or rice grown in flood-prone conditions. This publication and the accompanying CD will help increase the impact of new approaches to nutrient management at the farm level.

Rice: then & now
R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke
Product ID: 9789712200038

Three facts make both strategic and applied research on rice essential during the years ahead: (1) rice is, and will continue to be, the worlds most important food crop; (2) the world agricultural base is faced with possible constriction due to human interference with natural cycles; and (3) world population growth will continue well into the next century.

It is essential for the public, particularly those who support agricultural research, to have easily understandable information to help them understand the role of rice in feeding the world.

Rice-feeding insects of tropical Asia
B.M. Shepard, A.T. Barrion, and J.A. Litsinger
Product ID: 9789712200625

Before an intelligent decision about managing insect pests can be made, it is necessary to be able to identify which insect species are pests and which are beneficial.

This booklet illustrates examples of some of the more common species of insect pests that attack the rice crop. It can be used with the IRRI booklet Helpful insects, spiders and pathogens: friends of the rice farmer, which provides information only about beneficial species.

The occurrence of insect pests varies depending on the location, time of year, and crop cultural practices. Thus, we made no attempt to rank pest groups by their relative importance.

Scientific language has been minimized so that the descriptions can be more easily understood. The pictures provide an easy way of identifying pest species and thus help prevent unnecessary chemical treatments.

Like Helpful insects, this booklet is designed to facilitate its easy and inexpensive translation and copublication in languages other than English.
