An adventure in applied science:
A history of the International
Rice Research Institute
By Robert F. Chandler Jr.
For
those interested in IRRI's history, we are providing here an online version
(in pdf format, requiring Acrobat Reader) of this book, published in 1982
and reprinted in 1992, about the founding of IRRI and its subsequent first
20 years. Written by IRRI's first director general, Dr. Robert F. Chandler,
Jr., the story details the development of IRRI from 1955, when a team of
scientists and research administrators began to think about establishing
an international center for rice improvement. Chandler's narration of the
adventures of building and staffing IRRI--complete with interesting and
often humorous anecdotes about the people and problems he dealt with--takes
the reader through his years (1960-72) as director general. Dr. Chandler
died in March 1999.
