Turkey

TURKEY, a diverse land of 780,000 km2 in area, faces the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. Its western border marks the traditional separation of Europe and Asia. Turkey is mainly mountainous, with a coastal plain and high central plateau. The proportion of arable land is quite high, 32%, and agriculture occupies 46% of the workforce, making up 18% of the GDP. The population in 1999 was 65.5 million.

General information

  • GNI per capita PPP$, 2000: 7,030
  • Internal renewable water resources: 186.1 km3
  • Incoming water flow: 7 km3
  • Main food consumed: wheat, oil and fat, sugar and honey, milk, fruits
  • Rice consumption, 1999: 7.2 kg milled rice per person per year

Production constraints
Yield has increased steadily during the last five years. However, in 2000, yields were still low compared with those in other Mediterranean countries. The following are the major problems:

  • Low temperature during early stages of rice growth
  • Limited supply of irrigation water
  • High production costs
  • Blast
