Peter is the Chief of Staff of IRRI. This function coordinates strategic planning and operational activities for IRRI’s corporate services, and has responsibility for special initiatives. He is also the Head of IRRI Education, the arm of IRRI that exists to make available to all the knowledge and skills relevant to rice in particular and agriculture in general.
Peter has previously led teaching, research and strategic plan implementation programmes in the tertiary sector, government research laboratories, and a major private sector corporation. His own research work has been in the areas of solar energy utilization, heating ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) engineering in general, and indoor environment issues.
Prior to arriving at IRRI he was Chief Executive at the Manukau Institute of Technology, New Zealand from 2007 to 2016. He was the Dean of Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand from 1998 to 2007, and held various research and general leadership roles in Johnson Controls Inc, Wisconsin, USA from 1988 to 1998. In his earlier career he worked at government research laboratories in California (LBL) and New Zealand (DSIR).
He received his PhD in solar absorption cooling system design from Colorado State University and his BSc in Maths and Physics and BE in Engineering Science from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
