Vietnam’s MARD minister calls on promotion of climate-smart practices to reduce GHG emissions at COP26’s Ministerial Dialogue

26 April 2021 - Mr. Le Minh Hoan, Leader of Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), gave a statement to the 1st Round Table of the Ministerial Policy Dialogues on Transition to Sustainable Agriculture Conference of Agriculture at COP26. He emphasized the country’s remarkable progress in transforming agriculture production to be sustainable and contribute to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

To achieve the ambitious mitigation targets set out in its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement, Vietnam has accelerated research, development, and application of technological innovations in agriculture production.

The rice sector, which contributes substantially to agricultural production as well as GHG emissions, has also made profound transformation to be more sustainable and climate-friendly. Over the years, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has been working closely with national partners to support this process under the Climate Change and Food Security Program (CCAFS).

Minister Le Minh Hoan acknowledges the significant support of CCAFS and other international partners to Vietnam. He encourages other parties of the UNFCCC and development partners to promote climate-smart agricultural practices to build a sustainable food system and contribute to mitigating GHG emissions and addressing climate change impacts globally.
