IRRI Strengthens Nearly a Decade of Stewardship Excellence with Dual Global Certifications
LOS BAÑOS, Laguna (4 May 2026) – The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has received its third Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) and first Plant Breeding Innovation-Management Program (PBI-MP) certifications, recognizing nearly a decade of adherence to global standards for biotechnology-derived plant products.
ETS is a global initiative that promotes stewardship programs and quality management systems (QMS) across the full life cycle of biotechnology-derived crops. It ensures that research, development and product management processes meet internationally accepted standards for safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Organizations undergo audits every three years to assess how these systems operate in practice.
IRRI began the accreditation process in 2016 and strengthened its internal protocols and documentation systems to align with ETS requirements. It received its first certification in 2018 after it completed the initial audit within two years, followed by a second certification in 2023. In 2026, the institute secured its third ETS certification, reflecting sustained compliance and continuous improvement in its stewardship practices.
On the other hand, PBI-MP is a global, voluntary, industry-driven approach focusing on quality management systems, best management practices, transparency, and flexibility for new plant products developed using new plant breeding tools. It empowers the development, utilization, deployment, and adoption of plant products created through advanced breeding techniques, such as genome editing in agriculture. The program is specifically designed for trade facilitation and stakeholder management. It is intended to align with the principle that products developed using PBI methods be managed like conventional products.
IRRI’s latest audit evaluated both genetic engineering and gene editing innovations, seed and germplasm development, laboratory practices, documentation systems, and compliance with international protocols.
ETS and PBI-MP members include leading agricultural companies such as Bayer CropScience, Corteva, and Syngenta. Membership provides IRRI with expert guidance on stewardship implementation and independent audits to verify compliance.
IRRI continues to maintain full compliance with biosafety requirements and international standards in all research involving modern biotechnology products.
