Background
Rice remains central to the Philippine’s food security and rural development but continues to face sectoral challenges, including low productivity, climate vulnerability, and knowledge gaps among smallholder farmers.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and its partners, including the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), have made significant progress in addressing these gaps through digital agriculture innovations that provide tailored recommendations and actionable advice. These initiatives have also generated valuable agricultural and field data that combined with advances in artificial intelligence (AI), offer new opportunities to expand farmers’ access to timely, relevant, and practical knowledge.
Building on these efforts, the PalAI project aims to develop an AI-powered digital companion that serves as a personal agricultural assistant for rice farmers. Drawing on validated agricultural knowledge and data, the platform is designed to provide practical guidance on crop management, nutrient management, pests and diseases, and weather-related risks, with field- and location-specific advice where reliable information is available.
Through the PalAI project, DA-ATI and IRRI seek to harness AI and digital transformation to advance sustainable agricultural development. Complementing the technology, the project uses farmer-centered design, iterative user testing, and capacity development to improve accessibility and reliability. By strengthening the capacity of agricultural extension workers' and DA personnel's ability to use and communicate science-based recommendations, PalAI can support better-informed farming decisions, wider adoption of sustainable rice farming practices, and more resilient and inclusive rural livelihoods.
Objectives
The PalAI project aims to:
- Develop and validate the effectiveness of PalAI as an interactive AI-based learning tool, an assistant for agricultural advice, and a digital extension agent.
- Enhance the capacity of extension workers by equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to support farmers in adopting AI-driven agricultural solutions.
- Strengthen capacities of DA staff for effective communication and dissemination of sustainable rice farming practices, ensuring that AI and digital technologies are leveraged to support wide-scale adoption and sustainable impact.
