Temperate Rice Research Consortium

Temperate Rice Research Consortium

Background

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in partnership with the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) of Korea’s Rural Development Administration (RDA), established the Temperate Rice Research Consortium (TRRC) to collectively address the key challenges that temperate rice production faces such as biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as the increasing demands for improved yield, grain quality, and nutritional value.

The consortium was first organized in 2007 during a meeting in Suwon, South Korea, where scientists from 12 temperate rice-growing countries gathered to address production constraints through coordinated research efforts.

Formally organized with support from national and international institutions, TRRC facilitates collaboration in research, training, and technology generation based on the shared objective for temperate rice. Since its inception, the consortium has maximized its networks to connect scientists with diverse expertise, enabling the formation of multidisciplinary teams and fostering resource sharing across countries and institutions.

Objectives

  • Support research initiatives and strengthen partnerships.
  • Identify and prioritize concerns of temperate rice research in temperate environments and high-altitude areas in the tropics.
  • Provide logistical support and coordinate National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems (NARES)-IRRI research collaboration.
  • Promote resource sharing and information exchange among partners.
